The buffer tube (AKA receiver extension tube), serves two purposes. 1) It allows the user to attach a stock to the rifle. 2) It encapsulates the buffer and buffer spring, letting the bolt carrier ride back and forth to eject the spent brass and load the next round.

What is a bump stock for AR-15?

A “bump stock” replaces a rifle’s standard stock, which is the part held against the shoulder. It frees the weapon to slide back and forth rapidly, harnessing the energy from the kickback shooters feel when the weapon fires.

Can you add a stock to a AR-15 pistol?

An AR pistol cannot use a standard rifle stock. You must use a pistol stabilizing brace.

Does an AR-15 need a buffer tube?

The right buffers and buffer springs are necessary to keep your AR-15 functioning properly. The buffer itself serves as an additional weight to aid in the cyclic action of the AR-15, and it also serves as a cushion between the buffer spring and the bolt carrier group.

What does a buffer tube do on an AR-15?

The AR-15 buffer tube (also known as the receiver extension), is the metal protrusion that sticks out of the rifle and serves two functions: it houses the recoil buffer mechanism, and it serves as the attachment point for the buttstock.

Does a bump stock make a gun automatic?

Bump fire stocks are gun stocks that are specially designed to make bump firing easier but does not make the firearm automatic.

What is the point of a folding stock?

A collapsible (or telescoping) stock makes the weapon shorter and more compact for storage, carrying and concealment, and can be deployed just before shooting for better control.

Are folding stocks legal on a rifle?

The first concern of purchasing folding stocks is the legality of the accessory, which can be murky because the federal laws on guns do not have any explicit regulations on them. Following this logic, folding stocks are not illegal to own.

What makes a AR-15 pistol illegal?

An AR-15 pistol has a barrel shorter than 16 inches — this is the minimum legal length for a rifle barrel. The National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA) defines any rifle with a shoulder stock and barrel less than 16 inches in length and 26 inches in overall length to be a “short-barreled rifle” (SBR).

Can you convert an AR rifle to an SBR?

With approval and engraving requirements met, you can now legally convert your AR pistol into an SBR rifle by installing your stock, or otherwise completing your build if you haven’t already. You can even just keep your existing AR pistol brace installed if you want to since you’re legal either way at this point.
