What do you use a Flaker for?
The FGM Grain Flaker (by Family Grain Mill) What I like most about this unit is it uses a rough roller to pull the grains through but the other side is a curved shaped flat surface (see photo to the right) that helps keep the grain from getting crushed to much so your end product is better.
What is oat Flaker?
This beautifully designed German Oat flaker presses whole oat groats between stone wheels to make flaked oats. These can then be used for making oatmeal, granola or in baked goods. Or eaten plain! They taste like oatmeal cookies right out of the flaker. And it is so easy to use.

How do you Dehusk oats?
Dehusking Oat Grains If you find the grains are being stubborn, as I did, you can pull them off by hand. Once removed pour the oats on to baking trays, bake for 1 hour at 80C (180F). The husks will become wispy and dry. Let cool and rubb the grains by hand, to help seperate the grains.
What grains can you flake?
Oat Groats (whole oats), KAMUT, and Quinoa are the main grains I flake for cereals, deserts, and for adding to breads. You can also flake wheat, spelt, buckwheat, and many other grains. Some grains are too brittle such as einkorn for flaking at home.
Is NutriMill artiste made by Bosch?
NutriMill is the sister company to Bosch in the US. It also will only be 600 w but the bowl and attachments fit both the Artiste and the regular Bosch — which is AWESOME! I did test the Artiste. I will say that the motor isn’t as sturdy.
How do you harvest naked oats?
To harvest your oats, just cut the seed heads from the stalks. You can cut the stalks anywhere along the length, but the higher up you cut, the less straw you’ll have to deal with when you are threshing. A sharp knife or garden sickle will work fine. Once the seed heads are harvested, you will need to let them cure.
Are oat hulls edible?
When oats are initially harvested, they have a hard outer casing, called a hull. Oats with the hull aren’t edible for people, we can’t digest that part. But this does make good food for animals like cattle and horses.
Can you make your own quinoa flakes from quinoa?
Quinoa is the whole seed, whereas the quinoa flakes have been made using a specific machine. I like to describe quinoa flakes as the rolled oats version quinoa. Essentially, to make quinoa flakes they just take the whole quinoa seed and then flatten them into flakes using a grain flaker.
